The Book of Colossians

Text: Colossians 1:1,2 “Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother, To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
This evening, we’ll take a brief overview of the Book of Colossians as found in your Bible.

It is the 51st Book in the Bible, the 12th Book in the NT, and the 7th of the Pauline Epistles.  It contains 4 chapters, 95 verses, and 1,979 words.  This is .33% of all the chapters in the Bible, .3% of all of the verses in the Bible, and .25% of all of the Words contained in Scripture.  It’s a smaller Book that packs a powerful punch!

It is the 9th largest Epistle that Paul wrote, and the 7th largest Epistle to a Church that he penned.
Paul had never been to Colossae, but as the Apostle to the Gentiles, he still felt a need to write to them.

Colossae was 120 miles east of Ephesus, and was in a triad of cities, along with Hierapolis and Laodecia.  It had a branch of the Meander River (the Lycus) there, which was very cold.  Colossae sat at the base of Mt. Cadmus.

Colossae was in Phyrgia, and had a significant Hebrew population, with 2,000 families being resettled there.  It was also home of an angel cult, and religions blended there, as it was on a trade route from the Euphrates River to Ephesus, among other influences.

                           Chapter 1

Notice in Verse 2 the letter is only to saints and faithful brethren in Christ.  It will not apply to others.
Colossians 1:6 says the Gospel had gone into all of the world.  Since the Epistle was probably written between 53-63 AD, during Paul’s 1st imprisonment, I’d say the Gospel went fast!  There is still “Go” in the Gospel!
Verses 9-12 show us an example of how Paul prayed for them.  It is instructive of our prayer life today.
Verses 13-23 show us redemption and it’s power, as well as the identity of Jesus Christ.
Verses 24-31 show us Paul’s incredible sacrifice and walk with God, as well as what Jesus has done for us.
                        Chapter 2

Verse 1 Shows us Paul had not yet been to that area.
Verses 3-10 show us the supremacy of Christ over the wisdom of the world.
Verses 11-15 show us the greatness of the New Birth
Verses 16-23 tell us that self discipline and jewish law will not save us.

                                   Chapter 3
Verses 1-11 Tell us how to seek things that are above, not of the world.
Verses 12-25 are practical instructions to the Church for everyday life.

                     Chapter 4
Verse 1 continues the same as above
Verses 2-6 are about prayer and soulwinning
Verses 7-18 are primarily addressed to various individuals within the Church, with instructions.
Colossians is a powerful Book for us today!
Some select verses from Chapter 1

1:13 “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:”
1:15-17 “Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:  And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”
1:19 “For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;”
1:20 “And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.”
1:27 “To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:”
